Square Foot Gardening (SFG)

Big Muxima in partnership with Youth and Students for Peace - Angola, is developing the Square Foot Gardening (SFG) project for 3 orphanages in Angola (Africa) with almost 400 children and adolescents, predominantly girls. It´s a planting method that was developed by American author and TV presenter Mel Bartholomew in the 1970s.

 

With your help, we want to change the mindset of the young generation from the orphanages by teaching them that donations are not a sustainable way of living and that one day they must have the skills to work. But for this, they need support to be properly trained and

educated.

 

The project will cost nearly USD 14.000 per year. The equivalent of USD 35 per child/per year. It is only possible with the contribution of all. No matter how small your donation is, it will make a difference in the lives of approximately 400 children and adolescents in

3 orphanages.

Helping the Square Foot Gardening (SFG) project we will:

​

• Strengthen worldwide efforts at helping the next generation grow up in a “greener” world. Teach them to respect the environment and develop a sense of gratitude for what it provides us with.

• Promote the need to eat healthy food to fuel the big physical changes teenagers go through in puberty.

• Make them aware that good Nutrition helps students show up at school prepared to learn because improvements in nutrition make students healthier, good nutrition increases brain function.

• Develop values and virtues such as:

  • Responsibility

  • Kindness

  • Respect

  • Living for the cause and well-being and the welfare of others

  • Produce food in a small space, avoiding food and water waste

  • Develop the concept of urban agriculture

• Achieve 6 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030)

  • SDG 01 - No Poverty

  • SDG 02 - Zero Hunger

  • SDG 03 - Good Health and Wellbeing

  • SDG 04 - Quality Education

  • SDG 05 - Gender Equality, and

  • SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production.
